Simple Test to Check Mowing Height for St Augustine Lawn

  1. Stand in your lawn
  2. Look at your shoe
  3. If your shoe does not sink into the grass and the leaves are not above the top of your shoe – you are mowing too low, raise the mower.
  4. If your shoe sinks into the grass, completely obscuring the sole of your shoe and the tips of the leaves are above the top of your shoe – you are mowing at a minimum height.
  5. If your shoe sinks into the grass and the leaves cover all but the top of your shoe – you are mowing at the best height

What to Do if Your Lawn Fails the Simple Test

Raise your mower or tell your mow service to raise the mower to the highest setting. Then mow on your regular schedule. Your lawn will not grow uniform but after several mowings, the entire lawn will be the same height. Be patient and you will be rewarded with a great lawn.
