In 2007, Tierra Verde Landmark HOA requested a proposal for the lawn spraying (fertility and pest management) of their common areas – an area of about 1 acre of St Augustine turf dotted with Live Oak Trees and a privacy fence foundation planting. The common areas were in very poor shape and needed repair because the existing lawn spraying company failed to control chinch bugs and grubs. The HOA had budgeted $10,000 for sod replacement and set out to hire a new lawn spraying company to prevent another failure.
The Proposal
Enter me – Rick Orr - an experienced agronomist with over 30 years growing turf in commercial and residential settings. My proposal was simple: With a little effort, good water management and time, the common areas can be restored to its original beauty. Hire me and wait until the end of the current growing season to reevaluate the turf and decide how much repair and replacement is needed. They agreed!
The Results
After nine months of treatments and coaching the HOA on water management the turf fully recovered and repair and replacement was canceled. The turf had completely recovered and the Tierra Verde Landmark Circle common areas transformed from eyesore to a positive reflection of the community - a beautiful lush green environment and a welcoming entrance for their Tierra Verde community.

How Did I do It?
Maximum conditions give maximum growth. I know that St Augustine grass is a vigorous growing grass during the summer months. A single plant - with the proper fertility, pest control and water - is capable of populating a 4 sq. feet per growing season.
I focused on maintaining the fertility and controlling chinch bugs and grubs to maximize growth and reduce stress. I also gained the cooperation of the HOA and coached the HOA on how and when to water. The difference between the old lawn spraying company and me – knowledge, experience and cooperation! That’s how I did it!
